The history of First United Methodist Church, Tallassee, dates back to about 1850, when the first Methodist Society was organized and met in “an upper room” of the old “White Store,” a frame building which served as a community gathering place and owned and operated by the Tallassee Falls Manufacturing Company. The Society erected its first plain, wooden church on two lots on King Street, leased or donated by the Company. Membership increased steadily, and in 1898, a new church in the Upjohn style, with stained glass windows, towers, and spires was constructed, and by 1907 a handsome parsonage was completed.
In 1928 the present church on Jordan Avenue was completed, and in 1980 the church opened the Education Annex, an addition to the original building. Renovation of the entire building was completed in 2005, and on March 6, 2005, a service of Celebration and Rededication was held.
First United Methodist Church connects its history with the present-day world by offering a traditional worship service along with a contemporary service and a once-a-month evening Praise worship service called Journey. There are Sunday School classes for all ages and walks of life, as well as Disciple classes and other study groups. The children’s ministry includes Bible Blitz on Sunday afternoons and educational and fun trips in the summer. The youth have Bible study and lots of other activities.
Missions are a big part of the church’s ministry, locally and globally. The men of the church have established a wheelchair ramp ministry, building ramps for those in need, and members of the church take a yearly missions trip to other countries to help build churches and teach Bible school.
First United Methodist has a long tradition of an excellent music program, with grace and cherub choirs for the children, the adult chancel choir, the 8:30 a.m. ensemble, and the handbell choir.
Worship service times are at 8:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. on Sunday, with Sunday School at 9:45.
